Showers and Strong Winds Expected in Several Areas Today

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts today (10), according to the Department of Meteorology.

Showers or thundershowers may also occur at several locations in the Uva and Eastern provinces and in the Mullaittivu district after 2.00 p.m.

The Meteorology Department has urged the public to take adequate precautions against possible temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers are expected at a few places in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be south-westerly, with speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil.

Wind speeds may also increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai.

The sea areas extending from Hambantota to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times, while the sea areas from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankesanthurai may become fairly rough.

Wave heights in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota may increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres.

Authorities have advised the public, particularly those engaged in marine activities, to remain alert to changing weather and sea conditions.
