Police have recovered a three-wheeler suspected to have been used in a deadly bomb attack on a house in Dehiwala earlier today.
The vehicle was found abandoned in the Ihala Bope area, as investigations continue to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. on Sirisagabo Mawatha. According to police, an unidentified individual arrived at the house in a three-wheeler and knocked on the door.
When the occupants opened the door, the suspect allegedly hurled a hand grenade into the house before fleeing the scene.
CCTV footage has reportedly captured the suspect arriving at the residence in the three-wheeler shortly before the explosion.
Two children, aged 11 and 17, who were asleep inside the house, sustained critical injuries in the blast. They were rushed to hospital but later succumbed to their injuries.
Their 55-year-old father also sustained injuries to his leg. Police said there are no criminal charges against him.
A magistrate’s inquiry into the incident was conducted this morning.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established. Police have deployed three teams to conduct further investigations and locate the suspects involved.
