The protest by a group of Buddhist monks demanding the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera has ended following a court order issued on Friday (October 16).

According to reports, the monks removed the temporary shelters erected at the protest site and left the area in compliance with the court order.

The order was issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena, prohibiting Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thera and 54 others from remaining within the premises of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo.

The protest began on Thursday evening (October 15), when a group of Buddhist monks gathered outside the Presidential Secretariat, calling for the release of the imprisoned Gnanasara Thera.

Several monks remained at the site overnight, continuing their demonstration into Friday.

During the protest, the monks had occupied the pavement across Galle Road, opposite the Presidential Secretariat.

The temporary structures were dismantled following the court’s intervention, bringing the protest to an end.
