The Irrigation Department has issued a minor flood warning for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division following heavy rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas.
According to the Department, significant rainfall recorded over the past few hours has increased the risk of minor flooding in areas located close to the river.
The warning was issued at 11.30 a.m. today (26) and will remain in effect until 11.30 a.m. tomorrow (27).
Residents in the affected areas, as well as motorists travelling along roads passing through these locations, have been advised to exercise extreme caution.
The Department has also urged people living near the Mahaweli River to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions against possible flooding.
Meanwhile, disaster management authorities have been requested to implement appropriate precautionary measures to safeguard the public in the potentially affected areas.
