Kumara Jayakody has resigned from his position with immediate effect, according to an official letter addressed to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

In his resignation letter dated April 17, 2026, Jayakody said his decision was taken in light of ongoing investigations into coal procurement, including the appointment of a presidential commission of inquiry and the involvement of the Criminal Investigation Department to examine imports dating back to 2009.

He expressed support for the government’s anti-corruption drive and commitment to transparent governance, stating that he is stepping down to allow the investigations to proceed independently and without any potential influence. Jayakody also affirmed that he is prepared to accept the findings of the inquiry.

The outgoing minister thanked Members of Parliament for their support during a recent no-confidence motion and reiterated his commitment to clean politics and broader reform efforts.

Meanwhile, Ministry Secretary Udayanga Hemapala also submitted his resignation in a letter to the President, citing the need to ensure the credibility and independence of the ongoing investigations.

The Presidential Media Division has confirmed that both resignation letters have been received.
