The Japan has reaffirmed its support for Sri Lanka’s development by allocating USD 2.6 million under its Japanese Supplementary Budget for two new initiatives focused on climate resilience and gender equality.
The projects, implemented in collaboration with the Government of Sri Lanka and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Sri Lanka, aim to promote sustainable recovery and inclusive development across the country.
According to the UNDP, the first initiative—“Net-Zero, Nature-Positive Dairy – Climate-Smart Dairy Value Chains through Energy Transition & Nature-Based Solutions”—will establish a Climate-Smart Dairy ecosystem. This programme integrates green technologies, sustainable farming practices, and market-driven solutions to reduce emissions, boost dairy production, and strengthen resilience among vulnerable communities.
Carried out with policy guidance from key ministries, the project is expected to directly benefit 750 smallholder farmers and indirectly support over 5,000 individuals, including youth, agricultural entrepreneurs, veterinary professionals, and local community members. Special emphasis will be placed on women and youth in climate-vulnerable districts such as Kilinochchi and Nuwara Eliya. With a funding allocation of USD 1.5 million, the initiative builds on successful past models promoting renewable energy-based rural development.
The second project—“Gender Responsive Advancement and Operational Enhancement of Women Deminers in the Northern and Eastern Provinces”—focuses on strengthening the capacity and effectiveness of women engaged in demining activities. It will particularly support operations in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, contributing to safer communities and greater gender inclusion in post-conflict recovery efforts.
