The Negombo Magistrate’s Court has ordered the detention of 22 Buddhist monks arrested in connection with a major narcotics seizure at Bandaranaike International Airport until May 2.

The suspects were produced before court after authorities uncovered a large stock of suspected Kush and Hashish at the airport. Police stated that the haul, valued at over Rs. 1.1 billion, is among the largest drug seizures ever recorded at the airport.

The arrests were made during a raid conducted by the Police Narcotics Bureau following intelligence received on the operation.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the narcotics, identify those who financed the operation, and uncover any wider network linked to the alleged smuggling activities.
