Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education Harini Amarasuriya announced in Parliament that admissions to Sri Lanka’s state universities for the 2025/2026 academic year will begin in the first week of September 2026.
She stated that once the university cut-off marks are released, student registration lists will be forwarded to the respective universities by August 31, 2026. The commencement dates for academic activities will be decided individually by each university.
Providing an overview of this year’s examination figures, the Prime Minister noted that 281,810 students sat for the Advanced Level Examination, with 176,538 qualifying for university admission. Of these, 42,937 students are expected to secure placements in state universities.
She further clarified that the intake for first-degree programmes will not be increased this year. However, measures are being taken to expand facilities and enhance the overall quality and effectiveness of higher education in the country.
