Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa has been granted bail by the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court following his arrest earlier today.

Weerawansa was taken into custody after arriving at the Thalangama Police Station to provide a statement in connection with an ongoing investigation.

Police earlier stated that summons had been issued for him to appear before Thalangama Police after he allegedly failed to report yesterday over accusations of obstructing police duties at the National War Memorial in Battaramulla.

A tense situation was reported on May 18 when a group led by Weerawansa attempted to enter the National War Memorial during rehearsals for the Victory Day commemoration event.

Following the incident, Police announced that legal action would be taken against the group, including Weerawansa, over allegations of disrupting rehearsal activities and obstructing officials carrying out duties at the site.
