Department of Meteorology says showers are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka today (29).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

A few showers or thundershowers may also occur after 1.00 p.m. in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

Fairly strong winds of 30-40 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills and in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district.

The public has been advised to take precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers are expected at several places in sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Winds over sea areas will be southwesterly with speeds of 30-40 kmph, increasing up to 55-65 kmph at times in sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speeds may increase up to 50 kmph at times in other surrounding sea areas.

Sea areas off the coasts from Kankasanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota are expected to be very rough at times, while other sea areas around the island will remain fairly rough.

Wave heights may rise to between 2.0 and 2.5 metres in sea areas extending from Kalpitiya to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. The department further warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas could occur during thundershowers.
