Vietnamese police have dismantled a criminal network accused of stealing cats across southern parts of the country, rescuing more than 400 animals that were allegedly destined for slaughter and sale as meat.

Authorities arrested nine suspects last week in connection with a group believed to have been involved in cat theft and trafficking operations for the past three years. According to Ho Chi Minh City police, officers recovered more than 400 live cats, along with 80 dead animals stored on ice. An additional 21 cats were seized during a separate operation.

The investigation was launched following a sharp increase in reports of missing pets in Ho Chi Minh City. Suspects are said to have admitted to trapping and collecting cats from various locations across southern Vietnam.

Although the consumption of cat and dog meat is legal in Vietnam, traders are required to provide documentation proving the lawful origin of the animals. Authorities have not confirmed whether the alleged network possessed the necessary certificates.

International animal welfare organisation Humane World for Animals said at least 40 rescued cats had been reunited with their owners by Tuesday. The group praised police for taking swift action to save the animals, but noted that around 100 of the rescued cats later died due to the conditions they endured.

Animal welfare advocates have expressed concern for the remaining cats being kept as evidence during the legal proceedings. Humane World for Animals said it has provided food for the rescued animals and is working to supply fans to help prevent overheating while they remain in police custody.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Ho Chi Minh City police had not issued further comments at the time of reporting.
