Sri Lanka Wins Historic First Gold at WBC Muaythai World Championship 2026

Sri Lanka made history at the WBC Muaythai World Championship 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand, as Aashiq Nazeer claimed the country’s first-ever gold medal at the prestigious tournament.

Competing in the senior 57kg category, Aashiq delivered a standout performance to secure the gold, marking a major milestone for Sri Lankan Muay Thai. The championship was held from June 25 to 29 and featured competitors from around the world.

Sri Lanka fielded a six-member team, with four athletes finishing on the podium. In addition to Aashiq’s gold medal, Methuka won silver in the Boys 10–11 years (44kg) category, while Gevin earned bronze in the senior 71kg division and Kulunu secured bronze in the Boys 14–15 years (40kg) category.

Chairman of WBC Muaythai Sri Lanka, Roshan Duminda, hailed Aashiq’s victory as a landmark achievement, noting that it is the first gold medal ever won by Sri Lanka at the WBC Muaythai World Championship.

He added that the team’s overall medal success highlights the steady growth of Muay Thai in Sri Lanka and is expected to motivate and inspire the next generation of athletes to compete on the international stage.
