The death toll from the unrest that erupted at Negombo Prison today (July 6) has risen to eight, according to the latest reports.
The deceased are reported to include prison security officials, Special Task Force (STF) personnel, and inmates. More than 60 people have also been injured, with the majority being prison officers and other security personnel.
Prison authorities, supported by Police and STF personnel, continue operations to bring the situation under control following the outbreak of violence.
The latest unrest reportedly began after a confrontation between inmates and prison officials inside the prison.
The incident follows a separate clash that occurred at the prison yesterday (July 5) between two groups of inmates, which left two prisoners dead and dozens injured.
With the latest fatalities, the death toll from the two days of violence at Negombo Prison has risen to 10, while the number of injured has exceeded 60.
