A fresh wave of unrest has erupted at Negombo Prison today (July 6), with several prison officers reportedly injured during the incident.
Authorities deployed Police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel to the prison in an effort to bring the situation under control, while video footage from the scene showed security forces responding to the disturbance.
The latest unrest follows a violent clash that broke out inside the prison yesterday (July 5) between groups of remand and convicted inmates.
The earlier confrontation claimed the lives of two prisoners and left 38 others injured. Although prison authorities had managed to restore order by this morning, fresh disturbances were reported later in the day.
Further details on the cause of the renewed unrest and the condition of the injured prison officers are yet to be released.
