The death toll from the violent clashes at Negombo Prison has risen to 27 after another injured inmate succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment in hospital.
According to official figures, the fatalities include seven prison officers and 20 inmates.
Meanwhile, 23 prison officers and 53 inmates remain hospitalized at the Negombo District General Hospital and the Colombo National Hospital, receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the unrest.
The violence first erupted on Sunday (July 5) between groups of remand and convicted prisoners but was initially brought under control. At that stage, two people were confirmed dead and 38 others injured.
However, fresh violence broke out on Monday morning between inmates and prison officials, triggering a deadly escalation that claimed the lives of 27 people and left dozens more injured. Authorities say the situation is now under control.
