Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the final World Cup of his illustrious career, as Portugal prepare to face Spain in their Round of 16 clash on Monday in Dallas.
The 41-year-old forward has featured in six consecutive FIFA World Cups, becoming the first player in history to score in six different editions of the tournament. He confirmed that he will not take part in the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
Speaking ahead of the knockout match, Ronaldo said, “This will be my last World Cup, but let’s hope tomorrow isn’t my last game.”
Ronaldo has scored three goals at this year’s tournament, netting twice against Uzbekistan before converting his first-ever World Cup knockout-stage goal from the penalty spot against Croatia.
While confirming this will be his final World Cup, Ronaldo stopped short of announcing his retirement from football.
“The day will come, but whatever happens tomorrow, Cristiano will leave with a clear conscience—not 100%, but 1000%. I’ve given everything to football. I play because I love it. You have to enjoy every day, and I’ve scored three goals so far. I’m not doing too badly, right?” he said.
Ronaldo also spoke about Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, praising his potential while emphasizing the strength of the Spanish team as a whole.
“He’s a player with a big future. But I always see Spain as a whole—they’re all good. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll survive a long football career. If you listen to criticism, you’re lost. Over time, I learned to stay connected to the people who love you and to the passion for what you’re doing,” Ronaldo added.
