The Department of Meteorology says several parts of Sri Lanka are expected to experience showers today (09), while mainly dry weather will prevail across the rest of the island.

Several spells of showers are forecast for the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya districts. A few showers are also expected in the North Western Province.

Strong winds of 40–50 km/h are likely at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, the North Central, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western provinces, as well as the Hambantota, Trincomalee, and Mannar districts.

At sea, a few showers are expected off the coast from Negombo to Galle via Colombo. Southwesterly winds will prevail at 30–40 km/h, increasing to 50–60 km/h at times in the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil. Winds in the remaining sea areas may reach 50 km/h at times.

The sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil are expected to be rough at times, while the other sea areas around the island may be fairly rough.

Wave heights of 2.0 to 3.0 metres are also expected in the sea areas from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo, and the Meteorology Department has advised fishermen and naval operators to exercise caution.
