At least 15 people have been detained after clashes erupted between football fans and police in Buenos Aires following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Thousands of supporters had gathered across the Argentine capital to watch the final, hoping to see Lionel Messi and the national team successfully defend their World Cup title. However, celebrations turned to unrest after Spain secured victory through Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal.
Tensions had already flared on the pitch, with Argentina’s Enzo Fernández sent off during the match. Following the final whistle, Leandro Paredes was also shown a red card after an altercation with Spain defender Eric García.
According to Argentine media, violence broke out near the iconic Obelisk monument around 11:45 p.m. when a group of supporters attempted to breach security fencing surrounding the landmark.
The situation escalated as fans allegedly threw glass bottles and other objects at police, prompting officers to respond with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Authorities said at least 15 people were detained, while several others were injured. The extent of the injuries has not yet been confirmed.
Images from the scene showed debris scattered across the streets, with some footage appearing to show confrontations between police officers and supporters.
Despite the defeat, Argentine President Javier Milei announced that the country would observe a national holiday in recognition of the national team’s achievements. He said the date would be decided in consultation with the players and coaching staff.
Argentina also declared a public holiday following its 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph, when millions gathered in Buenos Aires to celebrate the team’s victory.
