The Department of Meteorology says showers will occur at times in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts today (17).

Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 p.m.

Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph may occur at times in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern provinces, as well as in the Trincomalee District.

The public has been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize possible damage from temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Meanwhile, showers are expected at several places in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds in the sea areas will be westerly to south-westerly at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas extending from Kankesanthurai to Chilaw via Mannar and Puttalam, and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

These sea areas may become rough at times, and naval and fishing communities are urged to remain vigilant.

Wave heights may increase to around 2.0–2.5 metres in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.
