MP Namal Rajapaksa has warned that the government could arrest and imprison him ahead of September 12 if it believes a large crowd is expected to gather in Anuradhapura.

Speaking to reporters, Rajapaksa said the government might take such action if it anticipates a significant turnout at the event.

His remarks come amid growing political tensions between the government and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). The party has recently claimed that a series of islandwide rallies scheduled to be led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake from September 5 are a response to the increasing political momentum generated by SLPP-organised rallies.

Rajapaksa also accused the government of attempting to suppress opposition voices, alleging that such measures were aimed at concealing the government’s own shortcomings.
