The Iran Cultural Centre of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sri Lanka recently held a celebration to mark Persian Poetry Day at the Iran Cultural Centre in Colombo.
The event was held under the patronage of Dr. Ali Kebriyayi Zadeh, Cultural Counsellor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Sri Lanka.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Kebriyayi Zadeh highlighted the significance of Persian poetry as one of the world’s oldest and most influential poetic traditions.
He noted the lasting contributions of renowned Persian poets such as Ferdowsi, Rumi, Saadi and Hafez, whose works have significantly influenced human thought, literature and worldviews across generations.
He further emphasized that a deeper appreciation of Persian poetry requires an understanding of Iran’s rich history and civilization. Throughout history, poetry has been deeply rooted in Iranian society, extending beyond royal courts and Sufi centres to schools, marketplaces and everyday life.
The celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on the rich literary heritage of Persian poetry and its continuing relevance across cultures and generations.
Adding a cultural dimension to the event, musician Ali Reza Shahini presented a special musical performance for the gathering.
