Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm and strong winds are expected in several parts of Sri Lanka over the next 36 hours, according to the Department of Meteorology.
The deep depression currently located over the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is expected to cross the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts of India tonight.
Although the system is not expected to directly affect Sri Lanka, wind patterns associated with the depression are contributing to continued heavy rainfall, particularly across the island’s southwestern areas.
Showers or thundershowers are expected periodically in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts. Heavy rainfall exceeding 100 mm could occur in some locations.
Light showers are also expected in the North-Central Province and Mannar District.
Meanwhile, strong wind gusts of around 40–50 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the Central Hills, North-Central and North-Western provinces, as well as Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale districts.
The public has been advised to remain cautious of lightning and sudden strong winds, particularly during thundershowers.
