Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath is scheduled to address the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 28.
According to the Foreign Ministry, Minister Herath is scheduled to leave for New York on September 26 to represent Sri Lanka during the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week.
The minister is expected to present Sri Lanka’s national statement, outlining the country’s foreign policy priorities and its positions on key international issues.
The visit will also include a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings with foreign ministers and senior United Nations officials. Discussions are expected to focus on strengthening Sri Lanka’s diplomatic relations and cooperation with international partners.
The 81st UN General Assembly is being held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The General Debate is taking place from September 22 to 26, with an additional sitting on September 28.
Major issues on the agenda include international peace and security, sustainable development, climate change and sea-level rise, nuclear disarmament, artificial intelligence and reforms to the multilateral system.
Sri Lanka’s participation provides an opportunity to present its national interests and priorities at the UN while engaging with international partners on issues affecting the country and the wider global community.
