Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has been further remanded until October 13 by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court in connection with a money laundering investigation linked to the procurement of Airbus aircraft by SriLankan Airlines.
Rajapaksa, who is currently in remand custody, was produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today (29) as a suspect in the investigation being conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara reportedly informed the court that investigations into the allegations of bribery and money laundering have been completed and that a combined indictment is expected to be filed.
Rajapaksa’s latest remand order extends his custody after he was previously ordered to remain in remand until today (29).
The investigation concerns alleged financial irregularities involving approximately US$2 million in connection with the procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines.
Rajapaksa was recently named as a suspect in the money laundering investigation following instructions from the Attorney General after investigators submitted material relating to the aircraft procurement deal.
The case stems from the controversial procurement of Airbus aircraft by SriLankan Airlines in 2013 and alleged irregularities involving financial transactions connected to the deal.
