Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed the parliament this morning (June 6) that the Supreme Court has ruled that several provisions of the proposed Anti-Corruption Bill are in conflict with the Constitution and should therefore be submitted after changes.
The Speaker said, “However, if the amendments to the Bill specified in the Supreme Court’s ruling are made, these inconsistencies disappear.”
As a result of the petitioners’ concerns, the Additional Solicitor General has notified the Supreme Court that changes would be made to provisions 8(3), 136, 141, 142, and 156 of the bill, as stated in the ruling.
