To commemorate the revered Esala Poya Day, the High Commission of India hosted a special exhibition at the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo yesterday (July 03). It featured India’s rich Buddhist legacy.

This day coincides with the Indian festival of Guru Purnima, which is observed to honor the guru or spiritual mentor who teaches wisdom, direction, and enlightenment, according to the Indian High Commission. The Buddha delivered his first sermon in Sarnath in India on this Poya day.

The special exhibition features a collection of images highlighting important moments in the Buddha’s life as well as some of the most well-known Buddhist pilgrimage destinations in India. There are also images of sculptures and carvings from India that date back many centuries. The show was viewed by Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thera and Gopal Baglay, the High Commissioner of India.

The Vesak and Poson Poya celebrations this year at Seema Malakaya and Homagama Poson Zone, respectively, were the most recent in a number of such exhibitions on India’s Buddhist past that the Indian High Commission said it organizes.
