In her capacity as Sri Lanka’s first Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Saroja Sirisena, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in London, recently handed Kitack Lim her credentials.

According to the High Commission, High Commissioner Sirisena presented her credentials on September 8.

In a press statement regarding this, the High Commission added:

“Sri Lanka’s accreditation to the IMO comes just before the nation is set to take up the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) leadership in October of this year. Sri Lanka is situated to be a significant maritime hub in the Indian Ocean because it is in the middle of one of the most important shipping lanes.

Sri Lanka continues to be dedicated to a safe, secure Indian Ocean and sustainable use of its maritime resources. The country’s geographic location and access to regional markets significantly increase its economic and commercial interests.

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which was founded in 1948 and has its headquarters in the UK, is a specialised organisation of the United Nations tasked with overseeing shipping safety and security as well as mitigating ship-related marine and atmospheric pollution. Currently, there are 175 Member States and 3 Associate Members of the IMO. In 1972, Sri Lanka became a member of IMO.
