In order to build a floating solar photovoltaic power plant on the Samanalawewa Reservoir, expressions of interest (EOIs) are expected to be requested, according to Kanchana Wijesekera, Minister of Power and Energy.

For the building of two floating solar power plants, each of which will produce 100 Megawatts of power, EOIs will be requested from domestic and international developers.

On Monday (23 October), the Cabinet of Ministers approved a request made by the Ministry of Power and Energy to solicit resolutions for the development and operation of the proposed solar power plants from parties interested in adhering to the national procurement regulations applicable to the implementation of infrastructure facility projects.

The necessary licence was granted when it was determined that building floating solar power plants on the tops of reservoirs to produce solar power is a far better solution for nations with limited land.

So it was agreed to build a floating solar power plant on about 100 hectares of the Samanalawewa Reservoir, which is under the control of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
