Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara urged the leadership of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment and the Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies to present proposals and strategies for discontinuing the practice of sending Sri Lankan women abroad to serve as domestic workers.

The Minister stressed the significance of ending the overseas deployment of women as domestic workers and suggested that women should be incentivized to pursue employment in high-paying skilled fields overseas instead.

During a discussion held today with members of the Association of Licensed Foreign Employment Agencies, the Minister emphasized that proposals in this regard should encompass the perspectives and recommendations of all stakeholders.

The Minister reiterated that the objective should be to entirely cease the migration of Sri Lankan women for domestic work abroad within the next decade and improve opportunities for them to seek employment in skilled sectors instead.
