A new documentary, “Killing the Travellers – The Untold Story of the Kurukkalmadam Massacre, 1990,” recently premiered, bringing attention to a forgotten atrocity from Sri Lanka’s civil war. Directed by Baazir Kaleelur Rahman, the film focuses on the 1990 massacre where dozens of Muslim travelers, including Hajj pilgrims, were killed by the LTTE near Kurukkalmadam in the Eastern Province.
The documentary features the stories of survivors and communities from Kattankudy who are still seeking justice and recognition decades after the tragedy.
The premiere, hosted by the Academy for Social Justice and Activists Without Borders, included a panel discussion with human rights activist Ruki Fernando, RISE Sri Lanka Chairman Mohammed Nawaz, and community advocate Najah Mohamed.
The discussion explored the historical context of the massacre, the lasting trauma for victims’ families, and the marginalization of Eastern Muslims during the war.
The event served as a call for accountability and a space for remembrance, highlighting the importance of confronting the difficult parts of Sri Lanka’s past.
