President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today issued a strong warning to police officers allegedly linked to drug trafficking networks, demanding that they immediately withdraw from such activities or face strict disciplinary action.
“Leave immediately! Otherwise, we will remove you,” the President declared, addressing the launch of the government’s new anti-narcotics initiative, “United as a Nation – National Drive,” held in Colombo.
The President said that many believe Sri Lanka’s drug crisis could be resolved if the Police Department were cleansed of corrupt elements, a sentiment he openly endorsed.
“Some villages say that when information is given to the Police, people later come looking for the informant. Authorities are taking steps to stop this,” he noted. “This is the era where the highest number of suspensions have been carried out within the Police Force. We have already suspended many officers. Others must now step out of that network.”
President Dissanayake further extended his warning to officials of other key state institutions, including the Departments of Immigration, Motor Traffic, and Customs, urging them to immediately sever ties with any illegal operations.
He stressed that the government will not hesitate to take firm action against public servants found to be aiding criminal networks, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to eradicate narcotics and dismantle corruption across all sectors of the state.
