The Department of Motor Traffic is preparing to introduce personalized vehicle number plates featuring custom names, officials informed the Committee on Public Funds (COPF).

During a recent COPF meeting, department officials highlighted that the current system is outdated, creating challenges for implementing such a project. They noted that once a new system is in place, a dedicated programme for personalized number plates could be launched within six months.

Officials also revealed that reservations for special number plates—priced between Rs. 100,000 and Rs. 1 million—are already underway, with some individuals having secured plates at the highest price point.

According to the department, 11 vehicles obtained special number plates in 2023, followed by 46 in 2024 and a significant rise to 692 in 2025. As of April 17, 2026, an additional 436 individuals had reserved number plates valued at Rs. 1 million.

In total, 1,185 vehicles have either obtained or reserved special number plates since 2023, reflecting growing public interest in customized vehicle registration options.
