Sri Lankan Students Hit by Rising Australia Visa Rejections

Sri Lankan students are among those most affected by tighter student visa policies in Australia, with new data showing a sharp increase in rejection rates for higher education visas.

According to the Department of Home Affairs, 38% of student visa applications from Sri Lanka were refused in February 2026, placing the country among the top five with the highest rejection rates.

Nepal recorded the highest refusal rate at 65%, followed by Bangladesh at 51% and India at 40%, while Bhutan stood at 36%.

The figures reflect a broader tightening of Australia’s migration policies, particularly around international students, amid concerns over visa misuse and growing pressure on housing and infrastructure.

Reports indicate that overall refusal rates for higher education visas have risen above 30%, one of the highest levels recorded in nearly two decades.

Australia has long been a popular destination for Sri Lankan students, but the increasing rejection rates are expected to disrupt study plans and create uncertainty for applicants.

Education consultants note that stricter scrutiny now requires stronger financial documentation, clearer academic pathways, and credible post-study plans.

The changes come as Australia continues to adjust its immigration system, with further revisions to student visa policies anticipated in the coming months.
