President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emphasized that anyone named in an investigation must provide a statement, highlighting the principle of equality before the law.
Addressing an event, the President stated that it is standard procedure to record statements from individuals whose names arise during investigations. “If my name has been mentioned, then a statement should be recorded from me as well. That is the normal process,” he said.
He acknowledged that such actions often spark controversy in Sri Lanka, but stressed the need to move away from that mindset.
“We must all be subject to the law and respect it. Whether it is the President or a Grama Niladhari, everyone must be accountable. No one can be above the law, regardless of their position or power,” he said, adding that this approach is vital to guide the country in a new direction.
The President also underscored the importance of fostering a society where all citizens are treated equally under the law, while assuring that legal provisions would not be misused.
“The law will not be used to hinder the duties of state officials, nor will it be applied unjustly or for acts of revenge,” he added.
