Kesbewa Records Highest Rainfall as Heavy Rain Alerts Issued Across Sri Lanka

The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours has been recorded in Kesbewa, with 204 mm reported between 08.30 a.m. Tuesday and 06.30 a.m. today (13).

According to data, Veyangoda received 145.5 mm of rain, while Gilimale recorded 121.0 mm during the same period.

Rainfall exceeding 100 mm was also reported in several areas, including Wathupitiwala (105.5 mm), Devitura Estate (102.5 mm), Bandaragama Government Farm (102.5 mm), and Horana (101.5 mm).

The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka has issued an advisory warning of heavy rainfall in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western and North-Central provinces, as well as in the districts of Trincomalee, Galle and Matara.

Under the advisory, which is in effect until 3.30 p.m. today, red alerts have been issued for 17 districts, while eight districts are under amber alerts.

The Department noted that prevailing showery conditions are expected to continue due to a low-pressure area in the vicinity of Sri Lanka.

Very heavy showers exceeding 200 mm are likely in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the districts of Puttalam, Galle and Matara. Meanwhile, heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is expected in parts of the Northern and North-Central provinces, as well as in Trincomalee and Kurunegala districts.
