A suspect remanded in connection with the rape and murder of schoolgirl Sivaloganathan Vidya has reportedly died by suicide while in custody at Jaffna Prison, prison authorities said.
The deceased was identified as 46-year-old Poobalan Jayakumar, who had been held on remand over his alleged involvement in the brutal 2015 crime that shocked the country. The incident is reported to have occurred late last night inside the prison premises.
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka upheld the death sentences handed to four men, including the main accused known as “Swiss Kumar”, over the abduction, gang rape and murder of 18-year-old Vidya in Jaffna in 2015.
