Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has praised Sri Lanka as one of the world’s most beautiful travel destinations, saying the island deserves recognition as the top holiday spot globally.
Speaking at a Softlogic Life investor forum in Colombo on Tuesday, Akram said Sri Lanka remains among his favourite destinations despite his extensive travels around the world.
The cricketing legend, who was recently unveiled as a brand ambassador for Softlogic Life Insurance PLC, said filming the company’s latest television commercial allowed him to revisit some of the country’s most scenic locations, including Galle and the central highlands.
Akram noted that Sri Lanka’s lush landscapes, rivers and stunning coastline rank among the most breathtaking sights he has encountered, adding that he was surprised the country is not already regarded as one of the world’s leading tourism destinations.
Reflecting on his long association with the island, Akram said he first visited Sri Lanka in 1985 as a teenager and has returned numerous times since then as a player, commentator and tourist.
He also expressed his intention to continue visiting Sri Lanka regularly and said he hopes to explore more of the country’s East Coast during future trips.
