The death toll from the devastating back-to-back earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday has risen to at least 188, while more than 1,520 people have been injured, according to Jorge Rodríguez.

Authorities also estimate that around 200 people remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings as rescue operations continue.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez has declared a nationwide state of emergency and confirmed that Simón Bolívar International Airport in Caracas has been closed after sustaining damage during the powerful tremors.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio pledged a “big, fast, effective” U.S. response to support relief and recovery efforts as the humanitarian crisis unfolds.

The United States Geological Survey has warned that the earthquakes are likely to result in “high casualties and extensive damage,” describing the disaster as widespread across affected regions. Rescue teams continue to search through the rubble as authorities work to reach those still missing.
