Negombo Prison Violence Death Toll Climbs to 25; Over 100 Injured

The death toll from the violence that erupted at Negombo Prison today (July 6) has reportedly risen to 25, according to the latest information.

Initial reports indicate that the deceased include four prison officials and four inmates, while the identities of the remaining victims have not yet been officially confirmed.

More than 100 people have also been injured, the majority of them prison officers and other security personnel.

Authorities say prison officials, together with Police and Special Task Force (STF) personnel, have now brought the situation under control following hours of unrest.

The latest violence reportedly broke out after a confrontation between inmates and prison officials inside the prison.

Today’s incident follows clashes between two groups of inmates at the prison yesterday (July 5), which also resulted in fatalities and injuries.

With the latest casualties, the death toll from the two days of violence at Negombo Prison has risen to more than 25, while the number of injured has exceeded 60.
