The two-day programme, held on October 9 and 10, aimed to bring happiness, inspiration and new opportunities to the children of Thanneyaya Primary School by introducing them to places and experiences beyond their everyday surroundings.
The initiative was launched with the approval of Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), and organised under the guidance of Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit, Mrs. Krishanthi Edirisinghe, with the support of Commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe.
Thanneyaya Primary School was selected following information obtained from the Ministry of Education and a field visit to assess the children’s living and educational conditions, as well as the facilities available at the school.
During their visit to Colombo, the children explored prominent landmarks, including Port City Colombo and the iconic Lotus Tower, giving them an opportunity to learn about the country’s modern development and architectural achievements.
A city tour aboard a double-decker bus offered a unique view of the commercial capital, while recreational activities at Excel World Entertainment Park added excitement and joy to their experience.
One of the highlights of the programme was an aircraft ride arranged by the Sri Lanka Air Force, providing the children with a rare and memorable experience.
Their stay at Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake further enriched the visit, with the Air Force providing meals and accommodation. The children also had the opportunity to observe aircraft movements at Bandaranaike International Airport.
These experiences were designed to broaden the children’s horizons, inspire their ambitions and encourage them to believe in their future aspirations.
Through the “Dreams Take Flight” initiative, the Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility and the wellbeing of the younger generation, extending its support to communities in need.
The programme highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, demonstrating how meaningful experiences can inspire confidence, nurture aspirations and open their minds to new possibilities.
The initiative served as a reminder that a single unforgettable experience can make a lasting difference in a child’s life, encouraging them to dream bigger and believe that their aspirations can take flight.
