The Department of Meteorology has issued an amber-level advisory warning of severe lightning in several parts of Sri Lanka, effective from 12 noon today (November 2) until 1.00 a.m. tomorrow (November 3).
According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in selected areas across 23 districts.
The advisory covers parts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Batticaloa, Ampara, Badulla, Galle, Matara, Kegalle, Monaragala, Mullaitivu, Puttalam and Vavuniya.
All Divisional Secretariat divisions in Hambantota, Matale, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee districts are also covered by the warning.
The department cautioned that thunderstorms could disrupt outdoor activities and cause localised power interruptions and disturbances to electrical and electronic equipment.
The public has been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or staying in exposed locations such as open fields, plantations and near water bodies.
People have also been urged to avoid using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power outlets during thunderstorms. Travelling in open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats, should also be avoided.
The department further warned the public to remain alert to fallen trees and power lines and to contact local disaster management authorities in case of an emergency.
