Chevaan Daniel, Group Director of the Capital Maharaja Group, has reportedly been elected Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), becoming the first Sri Lankan to hold the prestigious position.
His election marks a significant milestone for Sri Lanka’s broadcasting industry, securing the country representation at a senior leadership level within one of the world’s largest broadcasting organisations.
The development comes as Sri Lanka hosts the 63rd ABU General Assembly and Associated Meetings in Colombo for the first time.
The international event, being held at Cinnamon Life, City of Dreams, from October 30 to November 3, has brought together broadcasting executives, media professionals and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
The gathering is hosted by the Maharaja Media Network, part of the Capital Maharaja Group, under the theme “Media for Peace and Humanity: Truth, Trust and Transformation.”
Established in 1964 and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the ABU represents 225 broadcasting organisations across 66 countries. It promotes international cooperation, technological advancement and professional standards in the broadcasting sector.
The General Assembly was officially inaugurated on November 1 under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Discussions during the gathering focus on major challenges and developments shaping the global media industry, including artificial intelligence, digital transformation, cybersecurity, broadcasting technology and the role of media in strengthening public trust.
