The Department of Meteorology Sri Lanka has issued three key weather updates for Thursday (May 14), warning of continued adverse conditions across the island and surrounding sea areas.

Low-pressure system persists

The Department said the low-pressure area located northeast of Sri Lanka remains active. However, it is expected to gradually move away from the island and weaken over the next 36 hours.

Rainy conditions across the island

Showers or thundershowers are expected at intervals in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-Western and Northern provinces.

Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is likely in some areas of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle and Matara. Showers or thundershowers may also occur in other parts of the island after 1.00 p.m.

The public has been advised to take precautions against localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Rough seas and strong winds expected

Weather conditions over the sea areas around the island are also expected to worsen under the influence of the low-pressure system.

Naval and fishing communities have been urged to remain vigilant as showers or thundershowers are likely at times. Winds will be southwesterly at 25–35 km/h, but may strengthen up to 50–60 km/h in sea areas stretching from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

These sea areas are expected to be rough at times, while other surrounding waters may remain moderate.

Swell waves of about 2.0 to 2.5 metres are also likely along coastal areas from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can occur during thundershowers, the Department warned.
