The Court of Appeal has ordered that all interim petitions filed in support of a writ petition submitted by former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director Suresh Sallay be taken up on July 17.
The writ petition was filed challenging any move to arrest and detain Sallay under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.
Several parties, including Venerable Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Convener of the National Organizations Collective, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, and others, have filed interim applications seeking permission to intervene in the case.
The petitions were considered today (10) before Court of Appeal President Judge Rohantha Abeysooriya and Judge Priyantha Fernando.
Appearing for the respondents, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath informed the court that the interim petitions could only be considered after the court issues notice regarding the main writ petition.
However, President’s Counsel representing the intervening parties argued that the matter has already attracted significant public attention and requested an opportunity to make submissions.
Court of Appeal President Judge Rohantha Abeysooriya stated that the interim applications would be considered only after concluding submissions on behalf of the petitioner, which are being presented by President’s Counsel Sanjeewa Jayawardena.
