The experience and progress of Sri Lanka’s IMF-supported economic programme, with particular focus on its seventh review, were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation led by Sri Lanka Mission Chief Evan Papageorgiou at Parliament on Tuesday (22).
According to the Prime Minister’s Media Division, the discussions focused on progress made under the IMF-backed programme and the lessons learned during its implementation.
Prime Minister Amarasuriya highlighted the progress achieved in managing the economy amid multiple challenges and reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to maintaining economic stability while strengthening the country’s resilience to external shocks.
Reflecting on the Government’s two years in office, the Prime Minister described Sri Lanka’s engagement with the IMF as a positive experience, supported by open and transparent dialogue.
She also expressed appreciation for the IMF’s continued support as the Government seeks to move beyond economic stabilisation and achieve sustained economic growth.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of effectively managing external factors affecting the economy and said future engagement with development partners should focus on achieving sustainable, accountable and inclusive growth.
The meeting also addressed proposed amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act, particularly the need to strike an appropriate balance between privacy and transparency in asset declarations submitted to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
IMF Resident Representative to Sri Lanka Martha Tesfaye Woldemichael, Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Additional Secretary Sagarika Bogahawatta and representatives of the Central Bank also participated in the discussions.
