The Constitutional Council today (12) approved President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s recommendation to appoint Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya as the 37th IGP of Sri Lanka.
The decision was made at a meeting chaired by Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne. Weerasooriya, who has been serving as Acting IGP since November 2023, will now officially assume the role as the country’s top police officer.
Priyantha Weerasooriya’s elevation to the position of IGP is rooted in his exemplary and historic career, broad-based leadership experience, and the need to restore legitimacy in the police institution following the controversial tenure and subsequent removal of his predecessor, Deshabandu Tennakoon.
On 5 August 2025, Parliament passed a resolution formally removing Tennakoon from office—the first IGP in Sri Lankan history to be impeached and dismissed via this process.
