Minister Lal Kantha reaffirmed the government’s commitment to hold Provincial Council (PC) elections next year, stating that the polls will take place either under the existing electoral system or a newly enacted one.
Addressing the media, the Minister said the government has the option to conduct the elections under the old system by amending the previous Bill passed in Parliament.
“We have a two-thirds majority and can pass legislation to hold the PC elections under the old system,” he said.
Responding to questions about whether the opposition alliance poses a challenge, Minister Lal Kantha dismissed such concerns.
“The opposition alliance will never be an issue for us. We have a smoothly functioning Executive Presidency and 159 MPs working effectively. A new political culture has been established, and the people clearly understand the National People’s Power (NPP) government and its performance at the local level. So, we face no challenge in the upcoming elections,” he added.
