The Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) has launched an inquiry into 15 individuals suspected of providing financial and logistical assistance to extremists linked to the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks, officials told court on Friday (17).

The TID informed Colombo Additional Magistrate Lahiru Silva that the probe was initiated following a complaint lodged by the Head of the Terrorism and Financial Investigation Division. The suspects are alleged to have aided members of the extremist organisation responsible for the bombings by facilitating radical lectures, funding activities, and supporting foreign ISIS-affiliated groups seeking to establish operations in Sri Lanka.

Investigators said that some of the suspects have already been indicted before the High Court for their alleged involvement in supporting the Easter Sunday terror network. The ongoing investigation will also examine any links the suspects may have had with Al-Qaeda and other ISIS-related groups, as well as financial contributions made to these organisations.

After reviewing the submissions, the Additional Magistrate instructed the TID to accelerate the investigation and submit regular progress reports to the court.
