The Department of Meteorology says atmospheric conditions are becoming favorable for the development of afternoon thunderstorms in the Northern, North Central, Eastern and Uva provinces over the next few days, beginning today (03).
Several spells of showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts today.
Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Central and Eastern provinces and in the Polonnaruwa and Mullaitivu districts after 2.00 p.m.
The public has been advised to take necessary precautions against temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may occur during thundershowers.
In the sea areas, showers are expected at several places from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds are expected to be southwesterly at speeds of 30–40 kmph. Wind speeds may occasionally increase to 50–60 kmph in the sea areas from Hambantota to Pottuvil, while speeds of up to 50 kmph are possible from Kankesanthurai to Puttalam via Mannar.
