Sri Lanka’s railway trade unions have announced plans to launch a 48-hour strike on September 17 and 18, citing unresolved administrative issues within the Railways Department.
The unions said the industrial action will focus on two main demands: the removal of the General Manager of Railways and an immediate halt to disciplinary action against a trade union leader.
They accused the railway administration of contributing to the deterioration of railway services, highlighting frequent train delays and cancellations, overcrowding, inadequate services, declining passenger facilities and concerns over operational efficiency.
The unions warned that all railway trade unions are prepared to engage in joint trade union action if authorities fail to provide a satisfactory solution to their grievances.
The proposed strike is expected to disrupt railway services across the country if no agreement is reached before September 17.
